Guiding Principles (Charlotte Mason)

Children are born persons — treat them with dignity and offer a generous curriculum.
Education is the science of relations — connect the child to many living ideas.

By the end of the lesson and narration the student will have:

1. Listened to or read a substantial, worthy passage from a living book.
2. Produced a full, accurate oral or written narration in their own words.
3. Made at least one personal connection or observation from the reading.
4. Practiced one related habit (attention, perfect execution, or courtesy in discussion).

Lesson Structure (Short and Focused)

Opening (1-2 minutes)

Quiet settling. One sentence of context or anticipation: "Today we continue with [[character or event]] in our book. Listen carefully so you can tell it back."

Reading / Listening (6-12 minutes depending on age)

Teacher or student reads aloud a complete literary passage or chapter section (one "meal" — not too long).
No interruptions for explanation during the first reading.
Student listens with full attention (eyes on the reader or book).

Narration (the heart of the lesson — 4-8 minutes)

The student narrates without notes or prompts first.

1. "Tell me what you heard / read." (Allow full, uninterrupted narration.)

2. If the narration is thin, gentle prompt: "What happened next?" or "Tell me more about that part."

3. After the main narration, one or two follow-up questions that require the student to think: "Why do you think [[character]] did that?" or "How did that make you feel?"

Habit Focus (integrated — 1 minute)

Brief, specific commendation or reminder of one habit: "I noticed how well you waited until I finished before you began. That is courtesy."

Closing (1 minute)

Note the next reading in the student's lesson book.
Put materials away neatly (perfect execution).

Sample Narration Prompts by Age / Form

For younger students (Form 1, ages 6-9):

Tell the story back as if you were telling it to a friend who missed it.
What was the most interesting part? Why?

For middle (Form 2-3, ages 9-12):

Give a full account of the passage, including the order of events.
What do we learn about [[character or idea]] from this reading?

For older (Form 4+, ages 12+):

Narrate and then comment on the author's treatment of the theme.
Compare this passage with an earlier one in the book or with another author.

Picture Study or Composer Study Tie-In (Optional, Alternate Days)

When the term includes picture study:

1. Look silently at the chosen work of art for 3-5 minutes.
2. Narrate what is seen (details, composition, mood).
3. Artist name, title, and one interesting fact shared after narration.
4. Student may sketch from memory in the nature notebook or art journal.

Nature Study Connection

When the reading lends itself:

Take the book outdoors when possible.
After narration, spend 10-15 minutes in quiet observation and recording (drawing + short description) of a related natural object or phenomenon.
Keep entries dated and labeled.

Weekly Rhythm Example (One Subject Block)

Monday: New reading + oral narration
Tuesday: Continued reading + written narration (short)
Wednesday: Picture study or related nature walk entry
Thursday: Reading + oral narration with one deeper question

There are no tests or grades on content. The teacher notes:

Quality and completeness of narration over time
Growth in attention span and literary language
Evidence of connections the child makes across readings

A simple term-end note to parents describes the books read and general progress in narration and attention.
